Climate change alongside other human-made and natural health stressors affects human health and diseases in various ways. Also, existing health complications and threats ay intensify and as a result, new health issues emerge (Kalogeria& Yamamoto, 2020) The disruptions of ecological, physical, and biological systems can significantly affect public health. Some of these health effects include increased cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, premature deaths, and severe injuries due to extreme weather changes and events. Further, changes in the prevalence as well as the geographical distribution of food is a common occurrence as well as water-borne diseases and threats to mental health.  It is important to note that climate change changes the geographic range as well as the distribution of insects and pests which expose people to mosquitoes and ticks that carry the agents that lead to illnesses such as West Nile and dengue and Lyme disease(Kalogirou& Yamamoto, 2020). For example, communities found in the southeast are most vulnerable to the health impact emanating from flooding and heat. Also, climate-related events usually have a prolonged mental health impact on the affected communities especially if they lead to degradation of livelihoods or relocation of communities. This paper will focus on respiratory and mental health issues caused by global climate change. Global Climate Change and Health Essay

As earlier mentioned, climate change is a major threat to respiratory health since they directly cause respiratory diseases or aggravates the pre-existing ones as well as heightening the exposure to risk factors for such illnesses. According to research, air pollution can cause asthma(Kalogirou& Yamamoto, 2020). Conceptually, climate change leads to an increase in air and water pollution that can cause or aggravate chronic respiratory diseases. Essentially, the increased temperatures caused by climate change increase the ground-level ozone which results in the inflammation of the airways that damages the lung tissue.

Bad ozone also known as the ground-level ozone is the worst and most harmful for people who have asthma. It is usually formed when a chemical reaction between organic compounds and nitrogen oxide gets exposed to sunlight.  Some of these could emanate from motor vehicles, gasoline fumes, and industrial facilities (Nicholas et al., 2020). Typically, ground-level ozone reaches unhealthy levels on hot sunny days in the urban areas and it is a major component of urban smog which is a type of air pollution. Studies show that the most affected demographics of the ground-level ozone are children, people with lung diseases, the elderly, and those who actively spend their time outdoors. Unfortunately, children are at a greatest risk more than adults with asthma. Due to the unhealthy spikes caused by ground-level ozone pollution, the emergency room experiences an influx of visits as well as hospitalization of people with asthma. As earlier mentioned, climate change is a major concern since it is linked with feelings of anxiety and depression and excessiveuncertainty regarding the potential disruptions to culture, communities, subsistence foods, and traditional knowledge and the fear of relocation(Nicholas et al., 2020). Due to these uncertainties, the mental health of individuals is affected, and as a result, families and community interactions and relationships can have led to unhealthy responses such as self-harm and substance abuse.

Similarly, to the United States, adverse effects on climate change are seriously hampering many developing countries. Commonly reported effects are issues such as drought which causes a serious drop in agricultural production as well as a rise in food security(Nicholas et al., 2020). Countries that are generally warm tend to have their people facing serious respiratory issues since their systems tend to work harder to ensure their bodies are cool. Further, global climate change threatens national and food security in most of developing countries.  In regards to mental health issues in developing countries, the increased rates of temperatures cause aggression and violent suicides while droughts cause former suicides. It has been reported that global climate change has led to posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and adjustment disorder. further, people are forced to migrate and that could lead to acculturation stress, and to some extent the mental impairment leads tophysical illnesses that are related to psychological distress.
