Ethics is a very important concept in educational leadership. The reason is that leaders who possess a high standard of moral reasoning always make decisions that generate positive results for all interested parties. For instance, for an educational leader to influence change in his or her entity, he must employ the right tactics which are acceptable to stakeholders. The significant role that ethics plays in education leadership explains why today’s educators strive to teach students about moral reasoning and leadership styles that define an ethical leader (Noriega & Drew, 2013; Myers, 2015). This paper explores various definitions of ethics as well as the character traits and conducts of an ethical leader.

Ethics is generally defined as the wrongfulness or rightfulness of an act. In this context, whether a given action is right or wrong depends on its ability to adhere to the customs and rules that guide either a group of people or the society. Therefore, all desirable acts are considered to be ethical while the unacceptable ones are immoral. In the educational field, an ethical leader is one who demonstrates virtuous behaviors in all his actions. Such fore-runners apply moral reasoning in decision-making to influence programs that generate happiness to the largest number of interested parties (Northouse, 2016). Ideally, ethics in the educational leadership context refers to the moral choices that groundbreakers make to respond to specific circumstances.

Ethical educational leaders exhibit unique character traits that distinguish them from ordinary leaders who do not understand ethics and the role that it plays in leadership. For instance, for a leader in the educational field to be considered ethical, he or she must embrace diversity. Precisely, such forerunners must recognize the diverse skills possessed by different learners and employees (Noriega & Drew, 2013). This trait will help them to create an environment where every student is free to express their capabilities and in which every worker can explore their talents. Besides, an educational leader who values diversity will always make decisions that help their organizations to achieve their mission while at the same time creating an inclusive environment for all interested parties (Myers, 2015).

Furthermore, ethical educational leaders must be stern and straightforward. These traits will allow them to provide clear direction and guidance to their followers in relation to what tasks they are expected to perform for their organization to realize its objectives. By so doing, they become role models to their followers (Northouse, 2016). Additionally, integrity is a very important character trait that educational leaders should possess. In the educational field, integrity comprises other qualities including trustworthiness and honesty. Therefore, leaders who serve in this arena must understand that integrity enhances trust and creates a peaceful environment where every party feels encouraged and motivated. Other character traits which are important for an educational leader include effective communication and ability to adhere to the documented code of ethical conduct (Noriega & Drew, 2013).

Ethical educational leaders are influenced by their traits to conduct themselves in moral ways as they continue to steer their organizations towards the right direction. According to Northouse (2016), conducts of educational leaders are often divided into two broad categories. These classifications are defined in terms of ethical theories. Precisely, consequentialism ethical theory guides educational leaders to conduct themselves in a manner that will generate happiness to the largest number of interested parties. On the other hand, deontological theory instructs fore-runners in the educational field to behave in accordance with the set rules. For such leaders to combine both theories effectively in their actions, they must have a comprehensive understanding of ethics and possess relevant character traits (Noriega & Drew, 2013).

Educational leaders who make decisions that are focused on the achievement of positive consequences are expected to demonstrate three different types of conducts. First, such leaders should make decisions that will generate greatest benefits for their organizations. Second, they should engage in actions that maximize the social good and minimize social costs. For instance, the leader must always be sure to invest in programs that will generate profits (Noriega & Drew, 2013; Northouse, 2016). Again, a moral educational leader must demonstrate fairness and justice in such a way that all their followers will feel valued and cared for. Furthermore, leaders in the educational field who make decisions that are focused on rules always adhere to documented codes of ethical conduct. Such leaders will combine their authority with the contents of the code to help their followers deal with conflicting views (Northouse, 2016).

In summary, educational leaders should have a comprehensive understanding of ethics, the ethical character traits, and conducts that define a moral leader. Although ethics is generally defined as the wrongfulness or rightfulness of an act, leaders in the educational field must need to view this concept as the ability to apply moral reasoning in decision making. Besides, the character traits that leaders in the field under discussion must exhibit include; cultural competence, sternness, straightforwardness, integrity, effective communication, and adherence to a documented code of conduct. Essentially, the conducts of ethical educational leaders are determined by the desired consequences and existing rules.
