The advanced nursing practice that I aspire to pursue is the Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (AGNP). Throughout my experience as a nurse, I have always been motivated to reduce the number of elderly patients who are diagnosed with chronic illnesses. Over the years, I have learned that some of the health problems that affect the elderly population begin at during their adolescent years and during adulthood. For instance, a significant number of geriatric patients who struggle to manage chronic illnesses such as diabetes, HIV, and high blood pressure developed those problems during their youthful years. Therefore, my decision to pursue a career in Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (AGNP) was influenced by the rising number of geriatric patients who are diagnosed with chronic illnesses that could have been prevented during adolescent and adulthood years (Wu et al., 2013). Being a strong communicator, I believe that I will be able to combine my effective communication skills with clinical skills to influence a change in behavior among youths and adults in the community.  This strategy will help to prevent the occurrence of chronic illnesses that pose a great burden to geriatric patients. Carol’s credentials are a Masters in Nursing Primary Care (MSN, PC), Chronic Care Professional (CCP) Certification, and a Certified Managed Care Nurse (CMCN). Carol is currently employed at Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center in Lake Placid. She primarily delivers care to patients who need diabetes-related care. Occasionally, Carol leads a team of nurses to teach the community about health promotion practices that help to reduce risks for acquiring chronic illnesses. The interview has provided a good opportunity for understanding the legal and regulatory requirements for working as an AGNP in the state of Florida. Besides, it has created a room for gaining further insights into the professional organizations that are available for AGNP membership, as well as the required competencies and certifications for the role. Precisely, her care practice is primarily guided by Statute 2010-11.20 Section 9 of the established protocol, as well as the Florida Nurse Practice Act. In collaboration with the physician, the nurse applies relevant legal and regulatory standards in the diagnosis, treatment, and education of patients who need diabetes-related care. Moreover, Carol delivers care that is in compliance with the Florida Scope of Practice Policy (Florida Scope of Practice Policy, 2018). As documented in the policy, she works under a physician and follows a well-documented agreement when performing services that are related to drug administration.

Carol is interested in increasing the scope of her role as an AGPCNP-BC. 2What influenced your decision to become a nurse practitioner in your current role?

Carol used to work as a bedside nurse in a local community hospital. She was happy with what the NPs did in the facility. From there, she decided to advance my education from the original certificate level to BSN and to MSN. With these qualifications, she felt that it was the right time to have a more independent role.

3 What is the nature of your work-day?

As reported by Carol, she works from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm from Monday to Friday. I attend to an average of 100 patients per day.
