Contemporary healthcare organizations are faced with the challenge of managing large volumes of patients’ data. To facilitate effective data management, these facilities must implement the right infrastructure while maintaining compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) (Filkins et al., 2016). This paper evaluates the current state of infrastructure at my place of work. It critically explores the workflow and processes based on the existing technologies. Again, the paper has identified existing gaps and issues within the work environment. Again, it has provided solutions for improvement based on the identified gaps. The author of the paper has also highlighted the current technology that the facility should use to transform its healthcare infrastructure.

The current facility has taken an initiative to implement relevant infrastructure to enhance workflow and processes. The main technological tool that acts as the data management infrastructure in the organization is an electronic medical record (EMR) system. This innovation allows healthcare practitioners within the facility to share patients’ medical health data electronically (Manca, 2015). Besides, the infrastructure has simplified the workflow in the enterprise because physicians can view clients’ data and give recommendations about the most appropriate actions to be taken without having to travel from one place to another. Furthermore, the EMR has significantly improved the work processes within the syndicate because the clinicians can now deliver high-quality services. The specific area where the organization has recorded significant improvements include tracking changes in patients’ health, management of chronic health problems, and efficient utilization of resources (Manca, 2015).

Although the current facility has benefited greatly from the EMR system, there are some existing gaps and issues that it should address to qualify to be a modern organization. For instance, due to the rapid rise in the number of new patients, the available infrastructure is not enough for the company to effectively manage the big data that it continuously generates (Filkins et al., 2016). Additionally, the syndicate lacks clear guidelines and standards to govern data management with an EMR system. Such a deduction is made because there has been a rise in the number of complaints from patients concerning sharing and usage of their medical information by the medical company. Moreover, the organization has not implemented an electronic health record (EHR) system to allow sharing of patients’ information among physicians from different healthcare settings. The absence of an EHR system prevents clinicians in the current facility from interacting with their colleagues who are also involved in the care of patients, especially those who are receiving care from multiple syndicates (Manca, 2015).

The current facility can still take actions to improve the above-named gaps and to offer the best quality services for patients. For example, it should purchase additional devices for the EMRs system to help it manage the large volume of patients’ data. Additionally, the facility should formulate clear guidelines and standards to govern data management with the infrastructure that it has already developed. These policies will help practitioners to engage in moral acts that protect privacy rights of all patients (Filkins et al., 2016). Again, the syndicate should integrate technology that will enable is to share patients’ medical information with practitioners in other healthcare settings. The new systems will be beneficial to the current facility especially when it is trying to manage medical information for referred patients and those clients who are receiving care from multiple organizations (Manca, 2015).

As it attempts to implement the solutions described above, the organization should apply the principle of zero cost and the unlimited budget. Precisely, as the organization prepares a new budget for the new infrastructure, it should not make financial decisions based on its previous activities. Rather, it should scrutinize its expenses and try to manage costs in a manner that will enable it to achieve preset objectives. Basically, the facility should ensure that it creates a balance between employee activities, anticipated reforms, and expenses to avoid making the proposed changes appear as if they are financial burdens (Goodrich, 2013).

It is advisable that the organization under discussion integrates modern technology that can change its healthcare infrastructure. Examples of current innovations that it should consider in the planned reform include; an electronic health records (EHRs) system, patient portal, personal health records (PHRs) system, and a population health management (PHM) data infrastructure. With an EHR system, the syndicate will be able to share patients’ medical information with practitioners in other organizations (Manca, 2015). In addition, by implementing a patient portal system, the organization will give its patients an opportunity to manage their own healthcare data. Moreover, a personal health records system will allow patients to interact with physicians and share relevant information about their care processes. Most importantly, a population health management (PHM) data infrastructure will facilitate effective management of the big data in the current facility (Jain, 2017).

In summary, the company that I currently work for should improve its data management infrastructure by integrating current technology. As it makes such changes, the organization must adhere to the applicable laws while at the same time applying the principle of zero cost and the unlimited budget.
