Spiritual Needs Assessment and Reflection

Part 1: Interview

The following questions were used for the spiritual needs assessment.

  1. What is your main source of hope and strength?

God is my main source of hope and strength.

  1. Do you use prayer in life?

Yes. I pray on a daily basis to thank God for the free gift of life and everything He has provided.

  1. What is your philosophy about life?

I believe that life is a gift that God has given to humankind. Through this provision, He promises to bless those who remain righteous during their lifetime.

  1. How do you view dying?

In my own view, dying is a natural event that all human beings must experience

  1. To what extent has your illness affected you and your family?

My illness has greatly affected me and my family as a whole. Although it is the source of my physical inactivity and the economic problems in my family, I am happy that it has strengthened my faith in God.

  1. What goal do you wish to achieve in this health care experience?

My objective of being part of this therapeutic relationship is to understand how I can effectively manage my health condition, even as I continue to trust in God to provide healing.

Part 2: Analysis

Inward feelings that people develop whenever they are sick have a great impact on their healing processes. For instance, the health condition of a patient may worsen as a result of the fear that the client has developed towards death, dying, and grief. In order to help improve the overall wellbeing of the sick person, clinicians are advised to conduct a spiritual needs assessment with their clients using an appropriate framework. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations has developed a tool to assist healthcare practitioners in examining their patients’ spiritual needs (Hodge, 2006). Based on the Commission’s guidelines, the above tool has been created to examine the spiritual needs of a female Latino patient who is struggling to manage arthritis. The client is a Christian who is currently aged 46 years old. Spiritual Needs Assessment and Reflection nursing sample paper

The therapeutic relationship and the interview process are the two things that went well, thereby enhancing the success of the spiritual needs assessment. Precisely, the client was willing to take part in the interview. Additionally, she responded to the interview questions without fear. Again, although the interviewee was a strong Christian believer, she gave me an opportunity to conduct the interview despite the fact that I am a clinician.

Although the therapeutic session was successful, the effective implementation of the assessment tool was affected by the language barrier. The language barrier has been identified by many researchers as one of the factors that hinder healthcare practitioners from interacting effectively with their clients (Norouzinia et al., 2016). During the assessment, the fact that client was not fluent in the English language inhibited my ability to perfectly obtain answers to the survey questions. As Meuter et al. (2015) explain, the best way to mitigate the challenge of the language barrier is to use a translator. Based on this knowledge, I will include a translator in my interaction with the client in order to better address the challenge of the language barrier in my future assessments.

The assessment tool that I have used for the interview can assist me in providing appropriate interventions to meet the needs of my patient in several ways. For instance, using the information gathered, I will be able to recommend an intervention that supports Christian values considering the fact that the patient is a Christian and a strong believer in God (Whitty et al., 2017). Besides, I will use the tool to propose an intervention that will help the client to achieve the specific goal that she intends to realize in the current healthcare experience (Friedrichs et al., 2016).

During the survey, I discovered that illness and stress significantly amplified the spiritual needs and concerns of my patient. For instance, I realized that the client’s health condition has made her lose hope of living a normal life again. In this regard, she stated that her main source of hope and strength is God. In another example, due to the stress that the client is currently undergoing, the most important goal that she wants the clinician to help her achieve is learning how she can effectively manage her health condition.
