Practicum Journal

The goal of every psychotherapeutic relationship is to generate positive health outcomes for clients. For the clinician to achieve maximum success with every intervention, he or she must utilize an effective communication strategy to listen to and address his or her client’s problems. Nurses normally utilize various theories to design the best therapeutic relationships for their patients with psychiatric disorders (Wheeler, 2015; Rollin, 2011). It is important to note that many practitioners often fail to realize the desired goals with their patients because they lack an adequate understanding of how to approach the first interview sessions (Sommers-Flanagan & Sommers-Flanagan, 2014). In this paper, the author has described a nursing theory and a nursing theory that guides personal practice in psychotherapy. The paper also explains the goals, objectives, and practicum activities during a therapeutic relationship.

The nursing theory and the counseling theory that best guide my practice in psychotherapy are Hildegard Peplau Theory and Person-Centered Therapy respectively. Conceptualized in 1952, the Hildegard Peplau theory has helped to create positive interpersonal relationships between therapists and their clients. The main reason why this theory has been chosen is that it explores four major concepts which are crucial for the generation of positive health outcomes for psychiatric patients (Wheeler, 2015). The notions include the client, health, environment, and a constructive relationship. Besides, I frequently apply the theory in creating positive interpersonal relationships with my clients. Essentially, it guides me to begin every interview session with a formal introduction, followed by problem identification, exploitation of the issue and hand, and the establishment of the most appropriate resolution (Petiprin, 2016).

The main reason why I have chosen Person-Centered Therapy as the counseling theory that guides personal practice in psychotherapy is its ability to generate positive health outcomes for clients. The theory under discussion was conceptualized by Carl Rogers in 1951. In my relationship with clients, it guides me to develop an understanding of every individual as a person. Additionally, it has helped me to examine patients’ needs and to devise appropriate plans of care. Generally, I have found person-centered theory effective in strengthening our therapeutic relationships with clients as supported by Rogers (1951).

My practicum experience in this course will be guided by three major goals and three primary objectives. The goals include; to treat clients based on their interests, to help clients to understand the causes of their health problems, and to involve all patients in their care. The three objectives include, to help patients to recover from their health problems within a period of one month; to have a team of clients who perfectly understand the risk factors for their health conditions within a period of one week; and to have a team of patients who can implement appropriate interventions within a period of two weeks. Based on the goals and objectives highlighted in the above paragraph, it is evident that the timeline of them practicum activities is one month. The reason is that this is the longest time that successful completion of the activities will take (Wheeler, 2015).

In summary, nurses must be conversant with the actions that they should take during their initial interview sessions. In addition, they should know that the approach that they choose to take should be guided by a relevant theory. Personally, the nursing theory and the counseling theory that best guide my practice in psychotherapy are Hildegard Peplau Theory and Person-Centered Therapy respectively. Ideally, the exact timeline that practicum activities can take largely depends on the individual tasks that are to be accomplished.
