While the implementation plan prepares students to apply their research to the problem or issue they have identified for their capstone change proposal project, the literature review enables students to map out and move into the active planning and development stages of the project.

A literature review analyzes how current research supports the PICOT, as well as identifies what is known and what is not known in the evidence. Students will use the information from the earlier PICOT Statement Paper and Literature Evaluation Table assignment to develop a 750-1,000 word review that includes the following sections:

PICOT Question: Does a targeted educational program, compared to no educational program,

decrease the incidence of 30 day readmissions over a 6 month period?

Introduction

As Hosenpud and Greenberg (2013) explain in their article, congestive heart failure (CHF) is a medical term that is used to refer to health condition where the heart’s function as a blood-pumping organ is inadequate or below the normal required levels to meet the human body needs in relation to channeling enough oxygen and blood to the rest of body’s tissues/organs. The denoted cardiac health condition is primarily caused by damaged heart valves, exposure to toxics such as cocaine, cigarette smoke or alcohol, weakened heart muscles, hypertension which casues the thickening of heart muscles, blocked blood vessles which supply the heart muscles, and other specific genetic cardiovascular diseases. Adults exhibiting onset of symptoms such as dyspnea, persistent wheezing or coughing, swelling in the legs and ankles, fatigue and tiredness, nausea, loss of appetite, and impaired thinking would probably be diagnosed of CHF. Zeroing to the specific area of study in this paper, adult CHF patients subjected to a targeted educational program would present reduced incidences of 30 days readmission, compared to those with no education program involvement.

Comparison of Research Questions

In analyzing the various text excerpts joined together to make the picot statement a whole, it is probable for one to derive the following research questions.

  • What are the benefits of targeted educational programs to adult CHF patients?
  • How is the condition of having no educational program related to increased incidences of 30 days readmission of adult CHF patients?

In comparing and contrasting the above formulated research questions, the two present a contrast in that the subjection to an educational program of all adult CHF patients ensures that the respective victims of the featured heart problem have the necessary health information and knowledge deemed essential in managing the same condition. Hence, the targeted educational context benefits the CHF patients through availing them with alternative disease management strategies and thus, being able to avoid an incidence inclined to enhance their readmission within 30 days on discharge from hospital. Similarly, the same procedural setting surfaces in the second research question and this is because the lack of educational program would corner the CHF patients in accordance with the disease management outside the hospital setting.
